Photographer
Travel and photography have been two lifelong passions. In traveling the world for more than forty years, Alice, my wife and companion of over forty years, and my camera are always with me; one on either side.
To escape the frigid winters of my Wisconsin home, I moved to the Caribbean in 1961 to enjoy the southern sun during the early 1960s and 1970s and developed an initial interest in "picture taking". Then while calling Southern California home for thirty years, I participated in a number of college photography courses and other photo programs. After moving to Florida in 2005, with time on my hands, I started to pursue the art more seriously.
For years, I felt the only true art form was the image as seen through the camera lens and captured on film. I then joined the 21st Century and entered the world of digital imaging. The artist with a paint brush creates his own world. The film photographer works his magic through the camera lens and in the dark room. Many traditionalists of both media remain true to their preferred art forms and dismiss any degree of metamorphosis. Yet today, digital imaging offers countless creative options that allow greater freedom of expression limited only by the photo artist's ability and imagination. My work runs an eclectic range from "straight" photos to those slightly "tweaked" in sharpness and exposure to a collection of images running a gamut of transformation according to my whim at the time. A sampling of the latter can be seen in "Whims from Jim" where considerable artistic license has been employed. However, throughout my portfolio the blending of the art forms may be evident in varying degrees.
With a library in the thousands of images, I am sharing some of my work with those who enjoy the beauty of 21st Century photography.
